WOODWARD, Plattsburgh, NY 14,761 Page 2 of 13 ** PAGE BREAK ** War, Rev, Pension, JESSE SOPER, R9935 State of New York County of Clinton JESSE SOPER of Plattsburgh, Clinton County, aged 80 years, in addition to his declaration, made before the Court of Common Pleas of said County on the 4th day of October 1832, being duly sworn says that from the spring of the year 1775 to the spring of the year 1776, one year, deponent was an actual service in Captain NATHANIEL PLATT’s company, Colonel POTTER's regiment of New York militia stated by deponent in his said declaration. Deponent further says that said NATHANIEL PLATT’s company was an embodied corps, and called into service by competent authority and that during said year deponent served in guarding the coast from Huntington, New York, to East Hampton, New York, exept that during the winter our company lodged in different buildings in Smithtown, New York, but our company met everyday for military duty. In the spring, summer, and fall of said year, when the weather was not too cold, our company encamped out, some in tents, others in huts. Deponent was First Corporal in said company from the time he entered until he left said company and served as such Corporal, and during said year, was engaged in no civil pursuit but devoted his whole time to service and said company. We kept regular sentinels out during the year, except the winter when it was unnecessary, but our company met daily during the winter, unless my stopping to perform military duty and exercise. We drew our provisions weekly during the whole time I was in service as aforesaid. I served five months as a private in Captain JOSHUA ROGERS Company, Colonel THOMAS WEEKS Regiment of New York State troops as in my said declaration. I actually served as pilot under Lt. TIFFANY from the month of ??? May 1777 to the month of December 1777, 7 months during the winter our boats were laid up, and I was discharged at Norwalk Connecticut by Lt. TIFFANY in December 1777. I was mistaken when I said my declaration that I served the whole of 1777 and was discharged in the spring of 1778. For one year service as a Corporal, for five months as a private and for 7 months as a pilot during the revolution I claim as pension. JESSE SOPER Sworn and subscribed before me this 14th day of June 1833 and I certify that deponent is a credible person and Witness. PETER J. That as deponent understood at the time, company was employed and engaged from the spring of the year 1775 to the spring of the year 1776 in guarding the Coast from Huntington, New York, to East Hampton, New York. Deponent further says that he has been acquainted with said JESSE SOPER since the Revolution and frequently conversed with him relative to his service in the Revolutionary War, and the statements which said JESSE SOPER now makes of his service are the same which he has frequently made to deponent within 50 years past. NATHAN TAYLOR, Clerk Page 5 of 13 ** PAGE BREAK ** War, Rev, Pension, JESSE SOPER, R9935 Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th, 1832. State of New York Clinton County On this 4th day of October 1832 personally appeared, in open court before the judges of the Court of Common Pleas at the county of Clinton, now sitting, JESSE SOPER, a resident of Plattsburgh in the said County as state and State, aged 80 years, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th, 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following officers and served as herein stated. I was born in the 14th of August 1752 at Huntington, Suffolk County, New York I have a record of my age in my Bible, which I took from my father's Bible more than 40 years ago, which record I have recently referred to. I resided in Huntington, Suffolk County New York and enlisted in the spring of 1775 at that place for one year as a volunteer into Captain NATHANIEL PLATT’s Company of New York militia, Lt. PHILLIPS, Colonel POTTER's regiment. Marched from to Smithtown adjoining Huntington and was stationed at the place and was employed in guarding the coast from East Hampton to Huntington New York. I went to East Hampton to drive the British off Gardiner’s Island, but they had left it before our army arrived there. I actually served in said company at Smithtown Huntington and about there for one year when I was discharged in the spring of 1776 at Huntington New York. The company to which I belong I was raised by the Town of Huntington and Smithtown New York. DANIEL BLATCHLEY, DAVID CARL, JOSEPH SCRIBNER, ZEBULON SMITH, Sergt. and others whose names I cannot remember served with me and said company. The whole company was dismissed at the same time I was. I received no written discharge. I resided in Huntington after my time was out, about a month, and then in the same spring, I think I was discharged from Captain PLATT’s company in April or May 1776, I enlisted as a volunteer in Captain JOSHUA ROGERS Company, don't recollect Colonel's name, he was a Dutchman, or the names of the other officers ABEL CROOK was a Sergt. New York State troops and went to Cow Harbor and then embarked on board of a Sloop with our whole company and sailed to New York City and was stationed in Broad Street a while and then marched to Greenwich New York where we remained until the British frigates ROSE & PHOENIX and three tenders went up the North River as far as Tappan Bay. Our men sent up five ships and set the British vessels on fire about two weeks after the set British frigates went up to Tappan Bay. I had my ankle broke at Greenwich and about a week before our troops evacuated New York I received a furlough from our Colonel giving me permission to leave the service. This was, I think, about the 1st of October 1776. I according went to Norwalk Connecticut having served and said Captain ROGERS Company for more than 5 months remained at Norwalk Connecticut until the spring of 1777 by which time my ankle got well. Page 6 of 13 ** PAGE BREAK ** War, Rev, Pension, JESSE SOPER, R9935 I then enlisted at that place under Lt. TIFFANY as a mariner and entered on board of one of 3 whale boats commanded by said TIFFANY. Each boat had 10 men and I served under said TIFFANY one year and was dismissed by him at Norwalk in the spring of 1778. Lt. TIFFANY was a continental officer and was detached to the duty of commanding the said company of, I do not know of what regiment he belonged. We were engaged in reconnoitering the enemy and ascertaining their movements. I had no written discharge. I acted as pilot on board of one boat. After I left the service I resided in Huntington until 1788 when I removed to Plattsburgh, New York, which is where I have ever since resided and where I now reside. I never was a substitute and never was drafted. The names of persons to whom I am known in my present neighborhood and who can testify to my character for veracity and their belief of my services as a soldier of the Revolution AR JACOB MOORE, JOHN ROBERTS, DANIEL HILLYARD, HENRY PURDAY, LEVI SOPER, HENRY BULLIS, EZRA TURNER, HIRAM BIGELOW and others. I have no documentary evidence and no of no person whose testimony I can procure who can testify to my serve. I hereby relinquish every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declare that my name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state. JESSE SOPER Sworn and subscribed the day and your aforesaid in open court before me. GEORGE M.
