I think of cavalry and at one time was aid decamp to General LAFAYETTE. He Received lands in Ohio for his services, probably 3,000 or 4,000 acres which I suppose was granted by the state of Virginia, or rather given by that state, tho the grants issued from the U. S., whether he ever received any land from the U. S. or a donation I know not for certain, tho I think he did not. The question I wish answered is whether he is entitled to land from the U. S. or not. August 29, 1839 CADWALLADER JONES I am advised by an agent that the --- Virginia in arbitration has admitted one claim for about 1300 acres for my father’s services as aid to General LAFAYETTE. C. J. JONES Miners & Citizens Bank Yellville, Arkansas Sir: In response to your letter dated the twenty-second ultimo referred to this Bureau by the Honorable JOSEPH T. ROBINSON, you are advised that from the papers on file in Bounty Land claim Warrant No. 2,308, it appears that CADWALLADER JONES was a Captain in Colonel BAYLOR’s 3rd Continental Dragoons, and served to the end of the war, during which period he acted as a Deputy Quartermaster, and was Aide-de-Camp to General LAFAYETTE at the siege of Yorktown. Dates of appointment and discharge not stated. In 1839, CADWALLADER JONES of Hillsboro, North Carolina, FREDERICK L. F. PRIDE of Chester District, South Carolina, and LUCY P. GREEN of Columbia, South Carolina, children and sole heirs of Captain CADWALLADER JONES, applied for the bounty land which might have been due on account of his services, and the same was allowed on January 30th, 1843. Soldier’s age and death are not stated, and there is no further family data on file. The above, and CADWALLADER JONES S1543 of Wilson County, Tennessee, are the only soldiers of that name on the Revolutionary War records of this Bureau. Very Respectfully, G. M. SALTZGABER Commissioner Page 6 of 15 ** PAGE BREAK ** War Rev Pension, CADWALLADER JONES, BLWt2308 Haw River, NC 30th August, 1839 Sir, At the request of Colonel Cadwallader Jones of Hillsboro I enclose his memorandum to you, for the purpose of ascertaining if there is not bounty land due the heirs of his deceased father, Captain Cadwallader Jones of the Virginia Line. The Colonel informs me that some years ago his father’s heirs obtained lands in the state of Ohio, but he is under the impression it was a gratuity from the state of Virginia and not from the United States, and that the bounty was as Captain in Baylor’s regiment. Subsequently his father was appointed aid-de-camp to Marques de La Fayette and was his aid in 1781 at the taking of Little York. Has Cadwallader Jones of the Virginia Line received any grant for land from the Federal Government for his services as Captain in Baylor’s Regiment? Any for his services as aid-de-camp of General La Fayette? If he has not, is any due his heirs? Be so good as to cause examination to be made and write me the result of that examination. I remain very respectfully, Your obedient servant. James A. Craig I enclose you Col. Jones’ Memorandum. William Gordon, Esquire Bounty Land Office Washington city Page 7 of 15 ** PAGE BREAK ** War Rev Pension, CADWALLADER JONES, BLWt2308 Know all men by these presents that I, CADWALLADER JONES, of the County of Orange of North Carolina, do hereby appoint the Honorable Kenneth Rayner my proxy to receive & receipt for a land warrant for such amount of land as is due to the heirs of my father Captain CADWALLADER JONES of the Virginia Continental Line during the revolutionary war. For Commutation of 5 years full pay in lieu of half pay during life, pursuant to Act of Congress of the 22nd March, 1783 & the certificate of General MUCKLENBERG herewith 60 months @ 50 dollars per month 3,000 By balance to be certified on interest from the 23rd of March 1783 3,000 Sir, Captain JONES stands charged in the books of the pay office with 4,000 dollars received of the paymaster general in November 1778 & the further sum of 9,069 dollars in June 1779, for and on account of pay of the Regiment, the first sum of 4,000 dollars I find was deducted from the abstract of pay of the Regiment 1779. Captain JONES asserts the latter sum was actually paid to the Regiment for the purposes for which it was drawn, but Sir, I have no evidence of the fact and beg leave to submit the propriety of admitting this sum to his credit on his qualification. I cannot procure any evidence from the records of the War Office that Captain JONES was actually deranged on the 1st January 1781, it appears by the accounts of the state of Virginia that Captain JONES was allowed his pay for the year 1781, this probably was an oversight on the part of the state unless he was considered in service by his acting as D. Q. M. D. A. D. Camp there being no arrangement of the Virginia of the Virginia line between the 1st January 1781 and the 1st January 1785. I have taken the certificate of General MUCKLENBERG as my guide and have founded the claim thereon. S.
