C., and settled near Germantown in what is now Stokes Co., later removing to S. C. He was the father of General WADE HAMPTON of S. C. THOMAS HAMPTON, brother of ANTHONY [HAMPTON], settled in what is now the village of Hamptonville, Yadkin Co., N. C., later returning to Pittsylvania Co., Va., but his son. HENRY [HAMPTON] remained at Hamptonville. Among the children of this HENRY HAMPTON and wife SARAH BEVERS were two daughters, SARAH [HAMPTON] and MARGARET [HAMPTON], who m. RICHARD ALLEN Jr., of Wilkes; also a son, Colonel WILLIAM [HAMPTON], who m. NANCY BRYAN and settled at Swann Pond on south side of Yadkin five miles below Brier Creek Church. Among the children of WILLIAM [HAMPTON] and NANCY (BRYAN) HAMPTON were: (1) LOUISA [HAMPTON], (1818- 1894) m. Coloniel FELIX PARKS; (2) WILLIAM [HAMPTON], (1823- 1891) (the last of the HAMPTON name in Wilkes) m. Mrs. WILLIAM T. MARTIN (mother of Mrs. LULA (MARTIN) WEIR, and of the Anson County Martin family) (3) SULA ANN [HAMPTON], (d. 1897) 1 m. A. A. SCROGGS Ten generations of the Hampton descendants are as follows: I. WILLIAM HAMPTON (b. 1590, in England), planter, came to Virginia in 1620 on the ship “Bona Vona.” He settled in Elizabeth City Co., near present town of Hampton, not named for him. His Will was made in 1652; date of death unknown. In 1621 his wife, JOAN HAMPTON, and their three children, WILLIAM [HAMPTON] Jr., GRACE [HAMPTON], and ELIZABETH HAMPTON came over in the ship “Abigail” and joined him, THOMAS HAMPTON, their 2nd son, was born in Virginia in In 1640, this WILLIAM HAMPTON claimed his head rights for the transportation of himself, his wife and three children, and eight other. persons, one of whom was his sister, PHILADELPHIA HAMPTON. Accordingly he was granted a tract of 550 acres on Easternmost River in Elizabeth City Ce., later Gloucester, He had previously settled on a plantation of 200 acres held by lease from the government. At that time, land in Virginia could not be held in fee simple. After the law permitting the holding of land by private individuals was passed, WILLIAM HAMPTON took out patents for about 1300 acres of land from the King, and also purchased from private individuals. He moved into the county of Gloucester where he built his home “Hampville,” which continued in the family until 1743. II. Rev. THOMAS HAMPTON, son of WILLIAM [HAMPTON] and JOAN HAMPTON, was an Episcopal minister in James City Co., Va. His sons were JOHN [HAMPTON] and THOMAS [HAMPTON], III. JOHN HAMPTON, son of Rev. THOMAS [HAMPTON], lived in King William Co., Va. 1st wife was MARY MANN. Their children were: MARY [HAMPTON]; THOMAS [HAMPTON]; JOHN [HAMPTON]; WILLIAM [HAMPTON]; RICHARD [HAMPTON]. IV. JOHN HAMPTON II m. MARGARET WADE. Children: JOHN [HAMPTON]; ANTHONY [HAMPTON]; HENRY [HAMPTON]; JAMES [HAMPTON]; THOMAS [HAMPTON]; MARGARET [HAMPTON]; ELIZABETH [HAMPTON]; ROSAMOND [HAMPTON]. Their children were (not in order of age): Major JOHN [HAMPTON], PRESTON [HAMPTON]; MARGARET [HAMPTON]; Captain EDWARD [HAMPTON]; Colonel HENRY [HAMPTON]; Lieut Colonel RICHARD [HAMPTON]; Major General WADE [HAMPTON]; ELIZABETH [HAMPTON], ANTHONY HAMPTON lived in Fairfax Co., Va., then Halifax. He moved to Stokes Co., N. C., and later removed to S. C., and located near Pacolet, Here he and his wife, their son Preston, and their infant grandson were killed by Indians in the massacre of 1776. The home was burned. Their eight-year-old grandson, JOHN BYNUM, son of GRAY [BYNUM] and MARGARET (HAMPTON) BYNUM was visiting them. He witnessed the horrible murder, was carried off by the Indians and held several years until ransomed by his uncle, General WADE HAMPTON. VI. MARGARET HAMPTON m. 1761, GRAY BYNUM (1737-1814). VII. Miss FANNIE GERTRUDE (JETTIE) HARRILL, now living in Statesville, N. C. Page 5 of 11 ** PAGE BREAK ** History, Happy Valley History and Genealogy Thomas Felix Hickerson BRYAN The three brothers JOHN [BRYAN], ANDREW [BRYAN] and HENRY BRYAN came to Wilkes shortly before 1788 from Virginia. Previously they had lived and entered the Revolutionary army in Chester Co,, Penn., where their father ANDREW BRYAN Sr (originally - O'Brien) had come from Ireland accompanied by his wife, three sons and two daughters. Major JOHN BRYAN (1753-1842) of the Revolutionary army, known as Colonel BRYAN in Wilkes, was is described by Rev. WILLIAM BARBER as possessing unswerving integrity and candor. He m. (1788) NANCY ROBBINS of Gloucester Co., Va. Their children were: (1) ELVIRA [BRYAN], (1790-1863) m. (1806) Colonel JAMES MARTIN (1777-1863); (2) MATILDA [BRYAN], m. WILLIAM PARKS, parents of Colonel FELIX PARKS (who lived just east of the JOHN BRYAN home and on the original tract); (3) MARY [BRYAN], m. JAMES PARKS, parents of Colonel MARCUS [PARKS] and Colonel LYNDOLPH PARKS (who lived where the village of Roaring River stands); (4) FELIX [BRYAN], 1st Miss JULIA ANN SHIELDS, and Miss BURNEY in Ga., where they lived; (Note: JULIA ANN SHIELDS m. 1st FELIX BRYAN, 2nd THOMAS J. BURNEY) (5) CYNTHIA [BRYAN] m. Colonel FRANK PETTY; (6) NANCY [BRYAN] m. GEORGE BOWER of Ashe Co.; (7) JOHN ANDREW. Colonel JOHN BRYAN settled on the south side of the Yadkin a few miles east of Wilkesboro. Here he built (1803) one of the country mansions of that day. In later years it came into the possession of the Parks family through the marriage of his daughter MATILDA [BRYAN] to WILLIAM PARKS, In 1927, the old home was burned. The BRYAN plantation extended several miles eastward along the Yadkin to the land of BENJAMIN MARTIN. ANDREW BRYAN Jr (1756-1808), brother of Colonel JOHN BRYAN, m. (1790) DELPHIA GARNETT JONES. Their children were: (1) EDMUND [BRYAN] (b. 1791) m. URSILLA HAMPTON descendant of Colonel A. HAMPTON of King’s Mt fame, lived in Rutherfordton where he was known as General EDMUND BRYAN, a fine example of the old school gentleman, handsome, stately in bearing, and displaying a generous hospitality; (2) Nancy [BRYAN] m. WILLIAM HAMPTON son of HENRY HAMPTON of Hamptonville, lived at “Swann Pond” on south side of Yadkin five miles east of Brier Creek; (3) FANNY [BRYAN] m. Abner Carmichael, lived j in Brier Creek section, parents of MARY L. CARMICHAEL who m. Dr JAMES CALLAWAY, and PHEBE CAROLINE CARMICHAEL who m. Dr LAWSON HARRILL of Rutherfordton (their daughter, Miss JETTIE HARRILL now living in Statesville, N. C.); (4) GEORGE [BRYAN] (5) PHEBE [BRYAN] m. THOMAS KELLY, moved to Dalton, Ga.; (6) LEANDER [BRYAN], moved to Ala.; (7) BETSY LEMIRA [BRYAN] m. MILLER IRVIN of Burke Co., moved to Ga.; (8) JOHN JONES [BRYAN] m. Miss DUNCAN; (9) LARKIN [BRYAN]. A., born in England, lived at “Holley Lodge” in Happy Valley; (4) MARY [BRYAN] m. WILLIAM DAVENPORT JONES, lived at the “Fountain” in Happy Valley; (5) EDMUND [BRYAN] m. LAVALLETT PIERCE of Abingdon, Va. This BENJAMIN MARTIN, ensign and Revolutionary soldier in Va., was the son of HENRY MARTIN and SARAH BRYAN, d. of JOHN BRYAN of Pennsylvania, a relative (probably) of Colonel JOHN BRYAN who came to Wilkes, HENRY MARTIN was the son of PETER MARTIN and MARY ANTHONY RAPINE MARTIN of Goochland Co., Va., whose Huguenot ancestors came to America § in the year 1700. The said Ensign BENJAMIN MARTIN m. (1766) DIANA HARRISON, d. of BENJAMIN HARRISON of Pittsylvania Co., Va. Their 10 children were: (1) Dr ROBERT [MARTIN] (b. 1767) m. AMELIA WRIGHT; (2) PATSY [MARTIN] (b. 1769) m. BENJAMIN PARKS, parents of Colonel LYNDOLPH PARKS and Colonel MARCUS A. PARKS; (3) BENJAMIN [MARTIN] m. FRANCES MARTIN; (4) SARAH MEREDITH [MARTIN] (b. 1776) m. HIRAM ROUSSEAU of Wilkes County; (5) JAMES [MARTIN] (1777-1846) m, (1806) Elvira BRYAN; (6) ANNE [MARTIN] m. EDMUND BAGBY; (7) JOHN [MARTIN] m, MILDRED JONES; (8) ELIZABETH [MARTIN] m. JOHN MARTIN (son of William. M.); (9) AMELIA [MARTIN] (1786-1877) m. JOHN CLEVELAND, grandson of BEN CLEVELAND of King’s Mt. fame; (10) DIANA [MARTIN] (1788-1858) m. JOHN MARTIN. The children of Colonel JAMES MARTIN (1777-1846) and his wife ELVIRA BRYAN MARTIN (1790-1863) were: (1) JOHN [MARTIN] (b. 1808) moved to Macon, Ga., where he was married and had several children some of whom lived in Chattanooga, Tenn.; (2) DIANA ADELAID [MARTIN] (1810-86) m. JAMES CLEMMONS HUNT, parents of the three daughters, CYNISCA [HUNT], SUSAN [HUNT], and ELLA [HUNT]; (3) JAMES [MARTIN]; (4) BENJAMIN [MARTIN], twice married 3 sons killed in C. S. A., daughter ELVIRA [MARTIN]; (5) EMALINE [MARTIN] (d. 1861) m. Mr. Shuford; (6) ELVIRA [MARTIN] (d. 1862) Heathman; (7) FELIX [MARTIN] (c d. 1852, M Ga.); (8) MARY [MARTIN] m. J. CANSLER and moved to Indian Territory; (9) LELAND (Lee) [MARTIN] m. LAURA CORPENING of Morganton; (10) RUFUS [MARTIN] m. 1st JANE HICKERSON, 2nd ANN HICKERSON, moved to Little Rock, Ark.; (11) OSCAR [MARTIN]; (12) AUGUSTUS HARRISON [MARTIN] (b. 1833) m. SUSAN VIRGINIA CORPENING. JOHN SALE, parents of FRED L. SALE, lawyer, Asheville; (6) PHILETUS (FLEET) A. [MARTIN], (1866-1937), lawyer, Tex. The children of Captain AUGUSTUS HARRISON MARTIN (b. 1833), C.S.A., and SUSAN VIRGINIA CORPENING MARTIN were: (1) Dr. JAMES EVERETT [MARTIN] (d. 1924), M. D. (2) JULIUS [MARTIN], lawyer, Asheville, now Director Bureau of War Risk Litigation, Washington, D. C.; (3) LAURA ADELAIDE [MARTIN] m. 1st FRANK MCCULLOCH, 2nd JAMES LINNEY (dec’d), parents of RUTH LINNEY, Roaring River, N. C. Colonel JAMES MARTIN acquired a large body of land on the south side of the Yadkin between Ronda and Roaring River. His home, built (1806) near Brier Creek, still stands in good condition. PATSY MARTIN, d. of Ensign BENJAMIN MARTIN and DIANA (HARRISON) MARTIN (b. 1769). They established their home on the north side of the Yadkin, east of Roaring River, the plantation extending along the Yadkin east and west of Roaring River. Among their children were: WILLIAM PARKS m. MATILDA BRYAN, lived in the home of her father, Colonel JOHN BRYAN; JAMES PARKS m. MARY BRYAN, sister of MATILDA BRYAN, lived at Roaring River. A son of WILLIAM [PARKS] and MATILDA (BRYAN) PARKS was: Colonel FELIX P. PARKS m. LOUISA HAMPTON (1818-94) of Swank Pond, Their children were: (1) WILLIAM [PARKS]; (2) CLARENCE [PARKS]; (3) LEE [PARKS]; (4) BRYAN [PARKS] of Savannah, Ga.; (5) EDDIE [PARKS]; (6) IDA [PARKS]; (7) LOUISA [PARKS] The last two, Misses IDA [PARKS] and LOUISA PARKS are living today (1940) at the old home place. The children of JAMES PARKS and MARY (BRYAN) PARKS were: (1) Colonel LYNDOLPH [PARKS] m. LUCINDA PETTY, lived just west of Roaring River, old home now owned by his two sons, FELIX [PARKS] and HERBERT [PARKS]; (2) WILLIAM [PARKS], moved to Va.; (3) JOHN ANDREW [PARKS], moved to Mouth of Wilson, Va., his daughter, MEC [PARKS], m. JOHN A. MCMILLAN; and SUE [PARKS] m. RUFUS SPAINHOUR of Morganton, N. C.; (4) JAMES [PARKS], moved to Alleghany Co., where he m. CYNTHIA GENTRY, d. of Colonel ALLEN GENTRY; their daughter, SUSAN [PARKS], m. R. A. DOUGHTON, Esq, of Sparta, N. C.; (5) MARCUS A. [PARKS], Lieut-Colonel, C. S. A., m. MARY LENOIR HICKERSON (Table 53), moved to Calif., then to Muskogee, Okla; (6) OLIVER [PARKS], Captain, C. S. A., student U. N. C.; (7) CYNTHIA [PARKS] m.
