R. 044. 913.1 Page 1 of 4 ** PAGE BREAK ** Court, NC, Granville, William Bryant Murder ] North Carolina ] 17-Sep-1773 Granville County ] ] An Inquisition indented and taken at the parish of Granville in the county of Granville before me SAMUEL HERNDON and of the corners of our Sovereign Lord the King for the county of force it on the 17th day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy three upon view of the body of WILLIAM BRYANT then and there lying dead as the custom is to inquire after what means by scratch means manner and by what means the said WILLIAM BRYANT came by his death on the both of JONATHAN KITTRELL, CHARLES RUST EATON, JOHN DICKERSON, SAMUEL WALKER, WILLIAM HUNT, SAMUEL FULLER, WILLIAM SPEARS, JOSEPH JOHNSON, JOHN PEACE, WILLIAM ROBERTS, JOSEPH ROGERS, JOSEPH MCDONALD, AND CLAIBORNE HARRIS good and lawful men of our said county who being sworn in charged to inquire how and in what manner the said WILLIAM BRYANT by his death came to say that on the 16th of this instant September at the parish aforesaid they believe he was willfully murdered by some person but they don't know who. In Witness thereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals the day and year first above written. A Negro man, slave, the property of JOSEPH MCDONALD of the aforesaid County named SANDERS was brought to trial and it appearing to the court from the evidence and circumstances that he said Negro SANDERS was guilty of having shot and killed one WILLIAM BRYANT of the said county a few weeks before there for the word ordered the sheriff to burn the said Negro alive until he should be dead and consumed on Saturday the 23rd instant and also valued the said Negro to be worth 80 pounds proclamation money 2/8 like money for this copy.
